Traveling with Cigars Cuban Cigars Cigar Travel Customs and Cigars Cigars

No matter where you are traveling, there are always customs laws regarding what you can and cannot take into or out of the country. These laws can be strict especially in regards to traveling with cigars, more namely, Cuban cigars. You don’t want to be caught over the limit due to many reasons, including the biggest of which is fine and potential jail time depending on the amount of cigars over. Check out these tips to get you through the process of traveling safely with cigars.

1) Research

Always do your homework no matter where you’re traveling to or from. For Canadians, this means going on the Government Canada website and reviewing rules and regulations pertaining to the import and export of cigars in and out of the country. If researched, you’ll find that the legal limit for cigars is 50 per person, per trip. This is the best way to play it safe because you’ll always know the exact amount as well it will save you from possible detention or fines at customs. Regulation does not focus on boxes of cigars but purely the amount so it’s always good to be safe and count them before entering customs.

Also, be sure to know what is recognized as cigars and cigarettes or cigarillos. The different between them can make a huge and sometimes crucial difference which will save you money when traveling through customs. For example, on one of my trips to Cuba I found out that cigarillos are in fact classified under cigars, which caused some delayed customs entrance into the country. This is one of the most common cigar travel mistakes because due to the size of the cigarillos, most people assume they would be considered cigarettes. However, this is not so and you’ll need to be aware of how many you attempt to bring back into the country with you.

2) Don’t Cheat

Don’t try and cheat the system at customs by hiding or illegally storing excess cigars on your person or car. You will get caught and there will be fierce consequences. Huge fines or jail time isn’t worth it for the exporting of cigars. Also, make sure you haven’t accidentally put some away in your car or pocket before you enter customs. Customs official can be nasty when it comes to these types of things. From their point of view, your just another sap trying to sneak more cigars than allowed in or out of country.

So use these tips to help keep you safe when traveling with cigars. Remember, knowledge is power!
